The Social Democratic Front (SDF) and its chairman Ni John Fru Ndi have taken a 360° turn on its stance on running in the forth coming Senatorial elections in Cameroon, after Ni John announced his party would be sending in candidates for the election.

The SDF had earlier vowed to disrupt the pools if Mr. Biya goes ahead without giving his reasons why he convened the electorate for the Senatorial elections before the municipal elections. The SDF chieftain said it would be illegitimate to hold the elections with the present councilors (who forms the Electoral College for the senate election) whose mandate had long expired and with the absent of regional councilors (who are yet to be voted). The party argued that it would be normal for a new electoral college to be form with upcoming municipal and parliamentary elections before the senatorial elections are held.

But the chairman and the SDF last Thursday took a rather U-turn on the issue. Ni John Fru Ndi announced after an audience with the Director of Civil Cabinet at the Presidency Martin Belinga Eboutou that the SDF would take part in the poll.

Mr. Fru Ndi had earlier said his party would disrupt the poll unless the president gives him reasons for calling it before the municipal elections, something which seems to have been done when he met with Martin Belinga.

It is still unclear what transpired between Fru Ndi and Mr. Biya’s emissary last Thursday to force the frontline opposition party change its mind so suddenly.

There are speculations that Fru Ndi who was accompanied to the presidency by some of his close aides like First vice, Joshua Osih and vice president of the National Assembly Hon.  Joseph Mbah Ndam could have signed a pact with the CPDM concerning the SDF representation in the senate.

Chairman Fru Ndi is even quoted by “Cameroon Info net” to have said that ““I have told the SDF militants in particular that we are having discussions with Mr. Biya. And these discussions, he sent his emissary to talk to us and looking at the senatorial election which is the upper house, we’ve discussed not only at the level with Mr. Biya but also at the level of the party. And we’ve come to a conclusion that we should participate in this elections notwithstanding.”

The site even claims that Fru Ndi will run for senate “it is now official and without any doubts, the National Chairman of the Social Democratic Front, SDF, John Fru Ndi, will be among the 70 candidates to take part in the Sunday April 14 first ever senatorial elections in Cameroon” it cited Ni John.

“Cameroon Info net” goes further to quote him as saying “the upper house of Cameroon should be an assembly of mature people”
