President Biya says the construction of the second bridge on the River Wouri will accelerate economic development in Cameroon in particular and the CEMAC sub-region in general. He made the remark on November 14, while laying the foundation stone for the construction of a second bridge over the Wouri in Douala, Littoral Region.

Biya said once completed, the bridge will galvanize Douala’s position as the veritable economic nerve centre of the country. He said the 800-metre long bridge will lay the current traffic oldies to rest and ease the free movement of goods and persons from the West to the East. President Biya noted that 80 percent of food that enters Douala comes from the Northwest, Southwest and West Regions, passing across the Wouri Bridge.

To him, the new bridge will give a new kink to economic activities by easing traffic and the transportation of food and other goods. The second bridge, Biya said, will consist of a carriage way of five lanes, with two lanes from Deido to Bonaberi and three lanes from Bonaberi to Deido as well as two railway lines. Away from the bridge, Biya used the occasion to confirm the imminent construction of roads around the country.

He cited the construction of the Yaounde-Douala dual carriage way, the Kumba-Mamfe road, the continuation of the Bamenda Ring Road, the rehabilitation of Garoua-Kouseri stretch, the second phase of the Foumban-Manki and the completion of the Meiganga-Ngaundere roads.
To Biya, the construction of these roads, the development of ports and energy potentials are absolutely necessary for Cameroon that is struggling to become a modern state.

FCFA 109 Billion For Second Bridge

According to the Minister of Public Works, Patrice Amba Salla, who spoke during the ceremony at the banks of River Wouri, the second bridge will cut the enormity of the current traffic jam in Douala to size.

He said the two lanes of the old bridge will be reserved to traffic from Deido to Bonaberi. Thus, road users from Deido to Bonaberi will have four lanes. Those from Bonaberi to Deido will have three out of seven lanes that will be available as opposed to the present two. “The road and the rail lanes are supported by eight beams. The road carriage way is 24 metres wide, while the width of the rail lines is 10.10 metres. There is a total of 34.10 metres, for the whole bridge,” the Minister explained.

A consortium of companies led by SOGEA-SATOM will execute the project for a total of FCFA 109.16 billion. The design and construction of the bridge will cost FCFA 100.87 billion, while control works will swallow FCFA 5.2 billion. A circa FCFA 1.5 billion will be paid for indemnities and the displacement of existing facilities. The companies concerned say they will construct the bridge in 44 months.

Eight months will be used for the conception phase (already being executed), while 36 months will be used for the construction of the bridge proper. The French Development Agency is bankrolling the project with FCFA 66 billion. The second phase of the French Debt Relief and Development Contract, the C2D will pump in FCFA 20 billion, while the State of Cameroon will put in FCFA 23.16 billion.

The Logbaba Gas Plant

Apart from the second Wouri Bridge, President Biya also inaugurated the Logbaba Natural Gas Plant in Douala, which will provide a constant flow of energy to companies that are already connected, thereby improving their productivity.

It was for this reason that Biya rejoiced that the gas plant is a giant step into arresting the energy crisis in the country. Besides supplying gas for thermal energy, the Logbaba plant will also supply gas for the auto-generation of electricity at the premises of their customers. It will reduce the energy crisis in the country, especially in the dry season. It will also help to boost industrial production.

The Logbaba natural gas plant is a joint project by the State of Cameroon represented by the National Hydrocarbons Corporation, SNH, and the Rodeo Development LTD, a subsidiary of Victoria Oil and Gas Plc, a public limited British company that features on the London stock exchange.The daily production capacity of the gas plant stands at 2.5 million cubic feet of natural gas. It is expected to increase to 12 million cubic feet per day. The development of the plant generated 300 jobs.
