SDF Endorses Asapngu As National Organising Secretary

The results were withheld following heated exchanges between supporters of the two candidates

The National Executive Committee, NEC, of the SDF party, has endorsed Ferdinand Asapngu as the party’s National Organising Secretary. Asapngu is also the Mayor of Kumba II Council in Meme Division, Southwest Region.

He was endorsed at the weekend in Bamenda at the residence of the SDF Chairman, John Fru Ndi. The endorsement laid to rest the wrangling over the controversial results of election to the post at the last NEC Convention in Bamenda where Asapngu was challenged by Mochinggle Vaningasin.

Briefing the press Sunday, December 16, the SDF National Communication Officer, Beatrice Annembom Monju, said when the sealed ballot box that had been in the keeping of NEC since October was presented for the votes to be recounted, Asapngu’s challenger, Mochinggle rose up and said, for the sake of peace and the growth of the party, he would concede victory to Asapngu.

He is said to have pledged that he and Asapngu will work together. After declaring that he had given up the fight, Anembom said Mochinggle embraced Asapngu, putting an end to the conflict. The NEC reportedly set up two committees to prepare strong-worded memos to President Paul Biya.

NEC is said to be warning that Biya should not dare call Senatorial elections in January else, he will be violating the Constitution, which has to do with setting up Regional Councils that are not yet in place. According to Anembom, it is the regional councillors that have to elect senators as spelt out in the Constitution, so if President Biya "thinks he is going to cut corners again so as to have crushing majority everywhere again, he is mistaken."

The second memo to the President has to do with the lapses of Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) as reported by SDF militants out in the field as far as biometric registration is concerned. Presiding at the meeting, Fru Ndi called for massive registration of voters in the electoral roll and launched what party officials term "Operation Save Your Region", meaning all SDF militants must ensure that they win the upcoming elections throughout the country.
