SCNC Activists Bundled To Bamenda

Some 81 SCNC activities that were arrested in Kumbo recently have been transferred to the Gendarmerie Legion in Bamenda. So far, there has been no formal charge against them but The Post learnt they are being held for illegal assembly.

The activists were arrested on July 27 and August 3 in Kumbo. They were later transferred to the Northwest Regional Delegation of National Security in Bamenda, where they were kept for about three hours and then ferried to the Gendarmerie Legion.

While briefing The Post on Saturday, August 3, SCNC Defence Counsel, Barrister Nchombo said the arrest and detention was illegal. He insisted that it was as well illegal for them to be tried in Bamenda because they were arrested in Kumbo.

Out of the 81 activists, 50 are men and 31 women. Amongst the females is a 6-month pregnant woman, who is reported to have suffered from cramps due to the deplorable detention conditions. They were put in a 4m x 4m square cell with a bare cement floor, no seat and no toilet facility even where to pass out urine, The Post learnt. So far, when and where they will be tried remains unknown.
