Some 61 students of Bali Community High School, BCHS, have received scholarships worth over 500 thousand CFA Francs from the ROC Foundation – USA at a ceremony Tuesday January 7, 2013 at the school campus.

“We are simply offering an opportunity to young Cameroonians from underprivileged background to excel, provide them with the means to dream of a better tomorrow through hard work and dedication” said Langmia Fonjoe, co founder of ROC Foundation.

He encouraged them to emulate the example of Samuel Eto’o Fils who rose from a disadvantaged background to rise to the top of the world through hard work, perseverance and dedication and urged them to strive for success no matter their origins.

For Babila Jr. Doh, and Langmia, both first year college students in the U.S, Roc Foundation was born out of a necessity to help and give others the same opportunity like they have. “This was the school that my dad thought in and I used to see the struggle children went through to pay school fees and how many were dismissed from classes because of this, so I called my brother and said we have to do something about it, and that is how Roc Foundation came about” Babila said.

Receiving the gifts on behalf of the students, Martin Masalla, principal of the institution thanked ROC Foundation for their continuous support to the school since 2012 when they established link and urged them to spread their largesse to other schools in the subdivision.

Speaking on behalf of the benefiting students, Techu Christopher, the school senior prefect and Nahlela Emmanuella welcome the gesture as a timely intervention that would help them pursue their studies regularly.

The scholarship award consisted of cash prizes ranging from 10 000 to 30 000 each, a school bag with exercise books, pens, rulers and pencils, and the scholarship award certificate. The award was divided into seven categories, the Dr. and Mrs. Nwana Anniversary Award of 30. 000 frs, the St John’s Ozanan Society Scholarship Award and the five ROC awards that recompense the best in Science, math, and other disciplines.

It’s the second time  ROC Foundation is offering scholarships to students of BCHS. The first was in 2012 where they offered scholarship to 50 students alongside computers to the school multimedia centre. According to Langmia and Babila, they intend to continue with this support to others schools in Bali subdivision and to take it beyond Bali in the near future.
