Regional Election: Electorate Convene For Dec. 6, 2020

Municipal councillors and 1st, 2nd and 3rd class chiefs (Fons in the NW) that make up the electoral college for regional elections have been convened to the polls on December 6, 2020 following a presidential decree to that effect signed today by President Paul Biya.

The voting will hold only in the head quarters of the 56 divisions in Cameroon.
Voting shall begin at 8:00am and end at 6:00pm according to the decree.

According to Cameroon’s election law, each di idiom shall constitute a constituency. They Northwest region shall have seven constituencies corresponding to the seven divisions.

Two of the major opposition political parties, the Social Democratic Front and the Cameroon Renaissance Movement have indicated they will not be running.

The ruling CPDM is expected to sweep all the 10 regional councils and an overwhelming majority of the 56 division councils up for grab.

Regional elections are the last of a series of elections begining with the senatorial, then the legislative and municipal that aims at putting in place a decentralized system of governance in Cameroon. Their effective implementation is going to see a reduction in the powers of administrators and with more power devolved to local governmants.
