Louis Bapes Bapes detained minsec

The long time standing minister of secondary Education, Louis Bapes Bapes will spend his first night in detention today. He was picked up early this morning by elements of the judicial Police Yaounde on “high instructions” and taken to the Yaoundé Kondengui Maximum Security Prison where a special quarter had already been prepared for him at the 7th district of the prison reserved for VIP detainees.

Louis Bapes Bapes was Minister of Secondary Education since 2002 and has survived three cabinet shake up. He was also member of the Central Committee of the CPDM and was considered to be very close to the head of state, Paul Biya. Before joining government, he held the envious position of General manger of the Mission for the Management of Industrial Zones known under its French acronym as MAGZI from 1974 to 2004

The state media CRTV, in its 1 pm prime time Radio news in French on Monday March 31, said he was arrested on corruption charges and misappropriation of public funds.

Some observers say his arrest was long overdue after his second in command; Catherine Abena (of late), by then secretary of State for Secondary Education was arrested in 2010 on similar charges.

The arrest of Minister Bapes Bapes could open the door to a new wave of arrests of high personalities in government.

Louis Bapes Bapes is the first Cameroonian authority to be arrested while still in office since the start of “Operation Sparrow hawk " and this has prompted speculation that an eminent cabinet shake up is on the way, which will eventually pave the way for more arrests.
