MTN Elite One: 15000 fans spur YOSA to victory

July 29, 2012

It was the most attended match in Bamenda since YOSA’s ascension into the top flight four seasons ago, as over 15 000 fans jammed the Bamenda municipal stadium for a day 17 encounter between the home side and serial league champions, Cotonsport of Garoua this Sunday.

A heavy downpour just minutes before the kickoff had dampened the mode in town, but the rains instantly stopped one hour after, just as it had started, setting a perfect weather for a football match.

At the start of hostilities, YOSA looked more purposeful, maintaining more position but creating fewer chances. The first real opportunity of the game came at the 15 minute when Kongyuy Jude sent Dougoue Christain throw on a one-on- one but his efforts failed to beat the keeper who calmly collected his shot.

Meanwhile Cotonsport was looking more and more menacing as the game wore on with Namathoua posing all sorts of problems for the home defence as he threateningly kept possession of the ball around YOSA’s vital zone too often. The rest of the half passed without much action.

After the team talk, YOSA came back a more focused side. The charges of Doumbe Bosso confronted the second half with some urgency. And it was not long before it paid off, as Christain Dougoue rose highest to meet Douada’s cross from the corner spot after 50 minutes to sent the over 15 000 fans wild.

If the first goal was as a result of intense pressure on the visitors, the second was far from that.  It was the products of a delicate combination of inter-positional play spiced by accurate passing in a typical Barcelonan style.  In all it took 7 neat touches of the ball from the rare to serve Dougoue Christain once more just after the halfway line before he adjusted himself to unleash a 38 meter drive that completely caught the keeper off guard 7 minutes after the first goal.

But this as not to be the nail on Cotonsport’s coffin as the fans had hope. Instead the regrouped and orgainized to launched a series of raids on YOSA that finally paid dividend at the 75 minute with a goal by substitute Oke Joseph.

The remaining 15 minutes of the game were the most agonizing for the home fan. The stadium was plunged into a graveyard silence as YOSA continued to soak waves upon waves of attack.  The final whistle sent the supporters wild in jubilation.

The results means YOSA climbs into the second spot on the log on 30 points 3 behind leaders Union of Douala.
