Lions prepare for showdown against Mediterranean Knights

Training session Wednesday

Training session Wednesday

The stage is gradually been set for Cameroon’s penultimate world cup qualifier against the Knights of the Mediterranean this Sunday at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in Yaoundé, following the arrival of all but one of the 24 players called up for the assignment by head coach Volker Finke.

Media reports indicate Benoit Assou Ekoto was due to arrive late because he was still negotiating his move to Queens Park Rangers from Spurs and has obtained permission from the coach. Team captain Samuel Eto’o Fils has been joined by 23 others at the CAF Excellence Centre at Mbankomo, in the outskirt of Yaoundé.

Sofar Stéphane Mbia ,Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting, Alexandre Song, Armel Kana-Biyik, Benjamin Moukandjo, Joël Matip, Sammy Ndjock, Enoh Eyong, Dany Nounkeu, Aurélien Chedjou, Gaëtan Bong, Carlos Kameni, Achille Wébo, Raoul Loé, Jacques Zoua, Landry Nguémo, Jean II Makoun, Allan Nyom, Nicolas Nkoulou, Aminou Aboubacar,  Charles Itanje and  Dongou took part in training sessions today.

Cameroon needs a draw to book a place in the third and final round of qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup in Brazil, but the players are preparing for an all out victory on Sunday. Chouo Moting, Enoh Eyong, Nicolas Nkoulou and Jean II Makoun declared in a press conference this afternoon (without the head coach) that the team wants to score as many goals as possible, restore its pride, build confidence with the public and enter the next round were they are expected to meet a tougher challenge more reassuring.

Cameroon counts 10 points one ahead of Libya the only team in the group with a chance of qualifying. The DR Congo counts six points while Togo anchor the group with a single point. Cameroon hitherto where two points behind Libyans, but thanks to three points awarded the lions by the world governing body FIFA following the fielding of an ineligible player by Togo, Cameroon looks set at avoiding another early embarrassment in qualifiers.

Fifa has announced that the draw for the third and final round of African World Cup qualifiers CAF zone will be made on 16 September 2013 in Cairo. The matches will take the form of two-legged play-offs, with the aggregate winners going through to Brazil 2014.

Fifa has also stated that the five best-placed sides in the world rankings, as of 12 September 2013, will be seeded for the draw. Cameroon is presently ranked 8th on the continent and 51st in the world. The Ivory Coast, Ghana, Mali, Algeria, Nigeria, Cape Verde and Burkina Faso respectively ahead of the lions in the rankings are still with a chance to make the final cut.

The first legs of the play-offs will be played between 11-15 October 2013, while the second and decisive ties will take place on 15-19 November 2013.
