Aboubakar Vincent saved Cameroon from an embarrassment

It took the Lions almost 90 minutes to break down a very compact and disciplined Mauritanian defensive side that had 10 players behind the ball in their opening 2017 nations’ cup qualifier in Yaoundé yesterday.

Vincent Aboubakar scored in the 89th minute after he raced first to meet an overhead cross from Henri Bedimo, beating his marker and the goalie for the only goal of the game.

The visitors stood the lions for the entire game forcing some sections of the crowd to boo at the home side that looked almost helpless in front of a determined Mauritanian side..

Cameroon actually dominated the tie; Aboubakar himself had a number of opportunities, including a disallowed goal. The victory lifts Cameroon to top of the group after the opening round of matches, on three points after South Africa and the Gambia separated in a goalless draw while Mauritania are bottom with zero points.

Cameroon travels to the Gambia in September for their game while South Africa will be in Mauratania.
