Indomitable Lioness

The Lioness of Cameroon are the first side to qualify into the last four of the 2016 African Female Cup of Nation with a hard earned 1-0 victory over the Bayana Bayana of South Africa in Yaoundé yesterday. The lone goal of the match came in the 83 minute through Ngo Mbeleck who was first to react and pounced on a poor clearance by the South African to beat a very resolute South African defense that had been able to hold the Lioness at bay for close to 90 minutes.

The result put the Lioness on 6 points and assured of a semi-final spot and 3 points above second placed side Egypt that beat Zimbabwe by a goal to nil yesterday. The results yesterday also leaves one of the tournament’s pre-favourite, South Africa in a tight situation on a single point with a match to go. The South Africans travel to Limbe on Friday to lock-horns with the Egyptians whom they must beat to hope of a knockout spot.

Today, all attention will be focused on Limbe for the clash between Ghana and Nigeria at 4 pm. Both sides come into the match on three points and the winner will join Cameroon into the last four. Nigeria scored six passed Mali on day one and comes into the match highly buoyed while Ghana secured a 3-1 victory over Kenya on Day one and still harbour hopes of an upset against the tournament’s most successful side, setting the stage for an exciting encounter in Limbe this afternoon.

The second match of the day will pit Kenya against Mali as the battle for the crumbs of pool B.
