Heighten Tension on the Cameroon-Nigeria Border

The Bridge at Ekok, linking Cameroon and Nigeria

Tension mounted a notch between the Cameroonian military and Nigerian civilians for a few hours in the Nigeria border locality of Ekok. Videos circulating on social media Wednesday, February 21, 2018 show a Cameroonian military tank; probably by the BIR that is operating in the area parked on the bridge that separate the two countries.

The video also shows a Nigeria border official on phone probably with an official on the Cameroonian side exchanging bitter words. “If any Nigeria citizen is shot you will see the reaction of the Nigeria government” he shouted on the phone.  Shots were fired at Nigeria, witnesses said. The official in the video also spoke of shots being fire at the  Nigeria side and furiously asked to be taken out of the place.

 Neither Cameroon nor Nigeria has officially acknowledged the incident took place. The Nigerian police complained of an "intrusion" by over 70 Cameroonian soldiers in Danare in the Cross River state in January in hunt of Anglophones secessionists believe to be amongst the thousands of refugees in Nigeria. 

Cameroon and Nigeria  for the time being enjoy good relations. Both countries are actively coorprating in the fight against Boko Haram in the Northern parts of their territory. Nigeria also recently handed over the Interim President of the Southern Cameroon, Julius Ayuk Tabe and 47 others arrested in Nigeria to the Cameroonian 

Varying sources put the number of Anglophone Cameroonian fleeing the fighting in the English speaking regions of Cameroon into Nigeria at close to 40,000.
