Race of Hope: Lambi Elijah Fends off Oppositions in Test, Sends Warning Signals to Competitors

Lambi Elijah, athletes from the north west region  etched his name into the history of the Mount Cameroon test race in the south west region. The racer finished the 25km race using 2hours 30mins ahead of Star man Samuel Lyonga Essombe who came in  4th. The race took place recently from the Molyko Omnisport Stadium to the Intermediary Hurt and back. Lambi finished fourth during the 2019 edition of the Mount Cameroon Race of Hope.

Speaking to press men, Lambi Elijah hinted high level of Satisfaction with his build up to the race. He said despite the Socio- Political climate rocking the restive north west region, he has been managing to get set for this year’s Race. ‘ despite the fearful condition, I have been training and my position today says it all. I want to use this opportunity to plead with the powers that be to manage this crisis wisely for peace to return. There are some days that I wanted to go out for training, but the ghost towns really make it impossible for me and other athletes. Missing training just for one day, reduces success rate.’

Lambi Elijah was closing followed by another household name, Giya Roge, who finished the race in 2hours 40mins. The third Spot was Occupied by Teke Wilfred, meanwhile Lyonga Essombe, the son of the crown Queen of the Mountain, Sarah Liengu Etonge, Came in 4th on the log. 

Speaking as the racers hyked the Mountain, Dr. Sarah Liengu prescribed hardwork and love for the race as key to making strides. She encouraged the Young ladies who came up amass to run to copy from her footsteps and be patient for the right time.

To the South West delegate of Athletics, Andrew Eteki Njoh, today’s race was not just to meet up with the yearly build up to the Mount Cameroon Race of hope. But he painted the exercise as a reassuring factor for the populace to know they they are living no Stone unturn for this year’s event. He also disclosed that the Mount Cameroon Race of hope for the year 2020 will take place February 22, 2020. A total of 175 athletes took part in the test race.

Quizzed on athletes complaint concerning the part leading to the Mountain which is bushy, Eteki Njoh said he is aware of the situation but couldn’t single handedly put everything intake prior to the test race. ‘ The path is not perfect and the grass has overgrown. But I want you people to understand that we are waiting for Yaounde to give instructions and make the means available, so that we can be able to put the path in place’.

‘ On our own in the past years, we have been cleaning the path of the mountain, but at the end of the day it’s like the president become a hostage to those who clean the path of the mountain. I am appealing to the national president of Athletics, to make sure it gets to the quarters that matter that this path to the mountain be clean as fast as possible.’ Eteki appealled 

President, Eteki Njoh used the opportunity to sway the population to be hopeful, Confident during this challenging Socio-Political periods. For his part, the Secretary general of the south west Athletic league, Nlemba Roger, said the office is doing everything possible to give the race the pump it deserves. 

To him it could be time for the south west region to produce the next champion of the race after 5 years. He revealed that the test race has been run in other parts of the country and the Buea event is the last on the schedule.
