Elecam to distribute 5.4 million voter’s cards ahead of twin election

Elections Cameroon (ELECAM) has called on election stakeholders to play their civic role to enable the body distribute over 5.4 million voter’s cards ahead of the September 30th poll in Cameroon.

“Nationwide over 2 million voter’s cards have been distributed, that is just over 40%” Fonkam Azu’u president of Elecam said at a press briefing in Bamenda on Saturday July 13, 2013.

Mr. Fonkam also announced that all 17 members of the electoral board are on the field, first to see how the distribution of voter’s cards is ongoing and secondly to find out what measures have been taken by field collaborators to receive and forward to Yaoundé, application files for the council and parliamentary elections of 30th September.

Responding to questions, Fonkam Azu’u said mobile teams have been put in place to speed up the distribution exercise, which was previously only done at the Council branches of Elecam. He also revealed some 111751 cards have already been distributed in the Northwest Region by July 8, though Mezam Division the most populated still stand at 43% distribution rate, the best division in terms of distribution stands at 57%.

This he said was not there best, but encouraging and that more still have to be done before election date. He encouraged election stake holders to assist by rallying voters for Elecam to easily distribute the cards. But he insisted that Elecam would under no circumstance hand over a voter’s card to anyone else but the bearer, “not the son father or wife” he reiterated.

Mr. Fonkam leaves Bamenda for the West Region, while Dr. Sangu, his fellow board member continues to three other divisions of the region to meet with field collaborators.
