Dr Thaddeus Minang, Director of electoral process Elecam who sat in for the Director General of Elecam said some 5.4 million Cameroonians have been registered this far and that this launching also marks the beginning of the distribution exercise nationwide

“We print between seventy to a hundred thousand cards a day… and would take between 80 to 100 days to produce all the cards for the registered voters” he announced.

“Over 90% of the cards for registered voters in Mezam have already been produced and from the big towns we would proceed to the smaller ones” he continued.

Dr Minang said there was still much work to be done and that the electoral registers have been reopen till when the electorate is convened to the poll. He told those that would not be chance to receive their biometric voters card today to go to their respective council branches and collect it later.

Speaking earlier, Mr. Nga Casper said the distribution exercise is the reward of hard work put in by the Elecam staff and that all necessary functional measure would be implored for a smooth distribution exercise. He appreciated the support of stake holders like the administration and the media for their role played in assisting Elecam but said much work still lies ahead.

Biometric voters’ card carries the holders’ picture, fingers prints, full names, place of birth, parentage, profession and polling station.

The biometric system of registration is linked to a central server which makes it possible to detect fraud like multiple registration and inpersonification. The system is designed by the German company, Giesecke and Devrient
