Cameroon awaits appointment of 30 senators

The House of Representatives

The House of Representatives

Following the proclamation of results of the first ever senatorial elections in Cameroon by the  Supreme Court sitting in for the Constitutional Council on Monday April 29, the spotlight now is on the president of the Republic Paul Biya, who has up to 10 days after the proclamation of the results to appoint the remaining 30 senators to make it 100.

The head of state has up to Thursday May 9 to do so according to the electoral law. The question on almost every lip is who would make the cut? Would it be loyalist of the president to swell the ranks of his kinsmen that already stands at 56? Or would it be a mix of some unvoiced civil society members, some loyal traditional rulers, some acquiescent neutrals and some cave in opposition members or silenced men of the clergy? The wait is on and until the family head of the Unity Palace put pen to paper, nothing is yet clear. But one fact is certain; no one places scorpions on his bed before he goes to sleep.

There have been speculations in the press that Fru Ndi would be appointed amongst the 30. But party sources in Bamenda strongly deny it.  Ni John Fru Ndi told journalist in Bamenda after the proclamation of the results that he would never accept an appointment to senate from Mr Biya nor as a minister.

Unconfirmed reports say the SDF and other political parties have been called upon to present names for possible appointment as senators.

Below is the list of the already elected senators per region.
