The government delegate to the Bamenda City Council (BCC), Ndumu Nji Vincent has blamed the mayors of the three sub divisional councils that make up the city council for being responsible for the non respect of city council orders prohibiting the circulation of commercial bikes on tarred roads in Bamenda.

Taken late last year, the municipal order prohibits the total circulation of Commercial motorcycles popularly called “Okada” from circulating on the main streets of the town. Access to this prohibited street is control at some 46 identified points known as bridge heads in a bid to stem traffic congestion, road accidents, and disorder and insecurity, city council officials say.

Close to two months after the decision was taken albeit strong opposition from the riders, it is still to be implemented.

The Government Delegate in a press outing last week put the blame on the shoulders of the mayors of Bamenda I, II and III councils. He accused them of dragging their feet because of politics and selfish interest.

He however said all the necessary sensitization has been carried out and only the implementation phase is awaited.

Many of the bike riders have question how the Government Delegate’s decision would be implemented.

“How would we be able to refuel when all the filling stations are on tarred roads, how does a rider from Up Station who wants to work at  Nkwen or main town reach his destination?” Charles Ngu an “Okada” rider quipped.

For most of them, Bamenda is too small for such a decision to be implemented and would cause great hardship for city dwellers who will be force to take two or three drops to reach their destination through different means of transport.

Probably it’s because of these concerns that the elected representatives have decided to opt out of the BCC decision and with elections looming around the conner, everyone would want to gather as much votes as they could, knowing the power of the commercial bike riders in times like this.
