7 Years Suspension; End Of Iya Mohamed’s Reign At Fecafoot?

The Supreme State Audit recently suspended Iya Mohammed, Manager of the Cotton Development Company, SODECOTON, who doubles as Fecafoot president, from any managerial position for seven years.

Does this mean the end of his reign at the helm of Fecafoot where he has been president for the past 15 years? This question and many others would find answers in the days ahead.
The implication is that the decision would affect Iya standing for the post of president on May 25, slated date for Fecafoot elections.

Article 35, section 1 of Fecafoot status states: “any Cameroonian who has not been involved in any financial mismanagement can be eligible for the post of president”. And section 2 states, “should not have had their management questioned”. Iya was suspended for 20 managerial charges that cost the company a total of circa FCFA 9 billion and has been fined FCFA 2 million.

The decision comes day after the federation was asked to suspend elections in Fecafoot decentralised leagues. But, Iya and the general assembly decided to proceed with the elections. The assembly reiterated their loyalty through a motion of support. Many Cameroonians maintained that this is the end of Iya’s reign at Fecafoot.

They argue that if he could not be removed from Fecafoot because Fifa would intervene, he could simply be removed from the cotton company. There are allegations that Iya has decided to withdraw his candidature from the Fecafoot elections, but Etienne Tamo, Executive Bureau Member, has said Iya is their natural candidate until he makes his decision to officially withdraw.

However, he says in the eventuality of Iya‘s ineligibility, the federation would have a plan B and Iya would give instructions on what to do. Sources have indicated that Thombi A Roko Sidiki, the Secretary General of the federation, and Halim Konate, an influential member in charge of publicity department, are in line to head Fecafoot.

In the opposite camp, those equally eying the post are, Emmanuel Mve, former footballer and founder of the Citizens Committee to Redress Football, Robert Atah, another former footballer and assistant director at the Fecafoot Technical Centre, Essomba Eyenga, Fecafoot member, and Joseph Antoine Bell, former football who many think is the bridge between the opposition and government.

The idea of Anglophone to head the football federation has also been advanced. But, Prince Ndoki Mukete thinks that there is a lot of division within this group of people. He posits that it is time to collaborate and turn the tides.

Minister To Open Consultations Next Week

Meanwhile, the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Adoum Garoua has billed consultations for Fecafoot elections for next week.

According to the Minister, suspending elections at Fecafoot was to enable the Ministry to open enlarged consultations to streamline the process. However, the federation decided to go ahead with the elections despite the minister’s suspension under the pretext that the authorisations had been granted and that it was impossible to stop the elections given that the suspension came on the eve of elections.

Following the calendar, consultations start on April 9, with the Cameroon Professional Football League and Professional Elite Footballer Clubs. It is interesting to note that, Fecafoot President’s right hand man who resigned long ago, Addouraman Amadou, who has been critical of his former boss, Iya Mohammed, is among the persons the minister would consult.

The Cameroon National Union of Footballers, SYNAFOC, the Committee to Redress Football headed by Roving Ambassdor Roger Milla and the National Olympic and Sports Committee among others were also invited to meet the minister. The federation would be consulted last.
The electoral calendar may no longer be respected given these consultations may end and new orientations provided by the minister.
