The University of Douala has challenged the hegemony of the All University Games by beating the National Institute of Youth and Sport-INJS to the Top of the medal count in the 2017 edition held in Bamenda. The UYI (12) and INJS (7) have won all the previous 19 editions of the University Games, but the UD surprised all when its athletes surpassed all expectation to grab a total of 31 medals, 14 of which were in goal. UD outsmarted the INJS on the last day of the games by winning goal in Men's football after a 1- 0 victory over the UYI. Before the finals, INJS and the UD all had 13 gold.

It is the first time the UD has emerge champions of the all varsity games. The only two previous winners have been the university of  UYI and INJS. The host University, the University of Bamenda finished 12th on the general classification table with a total of 16 medals, 6 in silver and 10 in bronze. UBa Vice Chancellor,

Prof Theresa Nkuo Akenji saluted the athletes who had less than three weeks to prepare for the games.  She blamed this on the lack of  adequate preparations mainly due to the fact that the playgrounds were under construction and coupled with the prevailing socio-political crisis in the Northwest and Southwest regions that prevented UBa athletes from training elsewhere.
