UBa Feminine Football Team celebrating after 2-0 victory over UN

As the 2017 University Games at the University of Bamenda (UBa) enter the midway stage, the battle for supremacy has taken a different twist from the previous editions with the University of Douala (UD) attempting to dislodge the stronghold on the games by the traditional contestants for the top prize, the National Institute for Youth and Sports (INJS) and the Yaoundé I university (UYI),  with the “Mother of All Universities – UYI, looking a mere shadow of its self.

After the first three days of competition, the UD leads the medal counts on 8 – gold, 4 – silver and 1 –bronze ahead of INJS on 7 –gold, 7 – silver, 2 – bronze and UYII on 6 – gold, 4 – silver and 5 – bronze.  The UYI is further behind at 4th spot with a total of 14 medals five of which are in gold. The host university is yet to win a gold medal and presently occupies the 12 spot out of 16 competing institutions with a silver medal and two bronze. The University of Buea is sixth on the classification with a total of seven medals already, two gold, two silver and 3 bronze.

The Vice Chancellor of UB, Prof. Nalova Lyonga  reacting to her university’s impressive start to the campaign  in the “U-Games 2017 Newsletter” No 003  said “Two gold for UB this early signifies a change. You know our gold medals used to come a bit late. It gives us hope… let the athletes feel good and free as they compete…”

Adolph Lélé Lafrique, Governor of the NW region during a visit to the games on Monday expressed satisfaction with the hitch-free nature of the competitions so far, attributing the success to the serene and peaceful atmosphere that currently reigns in the region.

The UYI dominated the games in its early days winning the first 11 editions from its inception in 1998 before the coming of INJS in 2009 since which they have reigned supreme losing the crown only once, in 2015 when the University of Yaoundé I hosted and won. If the UD could maintain this momentum to the end, they would be only the third institution to have won the games beside the UYI and INJS.
