Three children between the ages of seven and one have been killed in their sleep during a fire accident that occurred on the night of Sunday June 16, at the Mile 12 neighbourhood Santa.

According to their mother, Chi Magritte Ngwe, she left the children asleep around 9:30 pm to go borrow a saucepan from a friend just a few metres away from the house and by the time she returned, the tragedy had already stroke. She said she left a bush lamp unattended to and also locked the door from outside.

It’s believed that the fire originated from the lamp engulfing dresses and other inflammable items that were close to it before spreading across the entire room which is less than 9 metres square.

Dr. Teboh Charles of the Santa District Hospital said the children might have died from suffocation before the fire finally burned them down.

The room is poorly ventilated with only one wooden window and too chucked up with items like, the bed, tables, dresses and puts cramped into the small room with barely enough space to pass out of the room.

Nguelle Nguelle Felix,  Mezam SDO who arrived the scene of the accident Monday morning accompany by the D.O and Mayor of Santa called on the population to use this incident as a reminder that parents should avoid using kerosene lamp when children are sleeping. He assured the bereaved family that government would do its best to support them.

The Mayor of Santa, Wanki Clement Atanga has provided three coffins and has put at the disposal of the family a council pickup vehicle to transport the corpses and family members to Alahtening village for burial. Meanwhile the traditional authorities of Njong Village have been at the scene to perform traditional rites to cleanse the compound before the corpses are buried.

This is a big shame to all on top, they wax in wealth while the majority vanish in poverty. Where are we heading to?
