Senatorial 2018: SDF Grabs All 7 Seats in NW

The SDF will win all seven senate seats in the Northwest contrary to earlier reports that they will go home with four seats while the remaining three would be shared. Some lawyers who spoke to Bamenda Online but would not want to be mention because it against the electoral law of Cameroon said the SDF is heading for all seven seats.

According to their explanations, article 7 sub 5 of  Law No 2006/005 of 14 JULY 2006 to lay down Conditions Governing the Election of Senators,  “Where no list obtains an absolute majority of the vote cast, the list with a relative majority shall be awarded half of the seats to be filled rounded up to the next, whole number, that is, 4 (four) seats”

A careful interpretation of that law shows that only the valid votes are taken into consideration. Given the results of the Northwest region, a total of 1039 councilors were eligible to vote, but two abstentions were recorded, leaving 1037 councilors as the constituted electorate. Of this number, 04 null votes were recorded. That mean only 1033 valid votes were recorded.

The SDF got 517 (50.05%) the CPDM 496 votes (48.02%) , the UDP 16 votes (1.55%) and the UNDP 02 votes (0.19%) of the total votes cast, unlike the percentages shown on the results so far released where the percentages were calculated based on the total number of electorate as seen in the table below.

If by some interpretation, the null votes are considered as an expression by the electorate, then they would be some slight changes. It would mean we go back to the earlier scenario where no party got an outright majority. That would mean the SDF failed to cross the 50% mark with 49.9% of the total votes. Meaning the parties would share the seats, with the SDF grabbing four.
