It took barely six minutes for the Indomitable Lions to finish the job against Dama Gazelle of Niger, with goals from Captain Stephane Mbia, Vincent Abubakar and Sali Edgar in the 36, 38 and 40th minute to take a commanding lead into the return leg of this double-header second round CAF qualifier for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The Lions had missed several opportunities in the opening 15 minutes of the match with Vincent Abubakar and Clinton Njie particularly guilty. But their consistent pressing paid dividend at the 36th minute when Stephane Mbia rose highest to nod in the curtain raiser. This was followed two minutes later by a thunderbolt free kick just outside the box by the Porto frontman-Vincent Abubakar before Sali Edgar pounced on a loose ball from an attempt by Choupo Moting  to put the game beyond their host reach.

This was the first match under interim coach Alexandre Belinga, and showed some flashes of brilliance by the team that has been so lackluster in their pass games since the world cup in 2014. The lions next entertain Niger at home in Yaoundé on Tuesday with the overall winner in both legs qualifying for the third and final round of qualifiers where the 20 surviving teams would be grouped into five pools of four teams each, and with the winners after six games booking a place in Russia 2018.
