NW Mayors Express Hope In PPRD Process

Mayors thin the reconstruction process could be path back to peace

The National Coordinator of the Presidential Plan for the Reconstruction of the Northwest and Southwest regions Paul Tasong has held a consultation meeting with delegates from Menchum, Boyo, Donga-Mantung and Bui in day two of his visit to the region.  All the delegates presented priority projects on how the reconstruction exercise should be carried out.

The mayors are positive that the reconstruction process is possible in the current security context.  The Mayor of Fundong, Awu Ndang thinks comfort should be provided to the people. “I think that those people need to be comforted before they restart their life. There are times we just plead with them to provide basic items like blankets and other kits just to give them hope he added.

The director of  strategic Humanitarian Service (SHUMAS) Mr Ndzerem Stephan Njodzeka pointed out that the acceptability of the project will depend on its packaging.”The packaging should not be done blindly rather it should be done in categories of about, four, from this amount to that amount.” It is important that the youths who are out of school age and who within the last four years have grown to adults and would no longer go to school be given special attention. They can be trained on a trade and be useful to themselves he proposed.

Mayor Ihimbru Solomon Kudi of Benakuma says these projects should be launched in all 34 municipalities of the region at once. He advised that it will rekindle hopes in the disgruntled youths. He went further to say the reconstruction of some 12 000 houses, schools, bridges, hospitals in both regions  could help restore peace.

Since the beginning of this crisis, the North West Region has not seen any meaningful development. The last four years because of the socio-political unrest has been spent destroying what we have taken years to build.

Minister Tasong Paul had earlier clarified that the reconstruction process will start from areas that are safer and gradually move into lest safer areas.  The same next consultation meeting on Wednesday June 24 will be with stakeholders from  Mezam, Momo and Boyo.  Minister Paul Tasong will round up his stay in the region with a press conference on Friday June 26.
