Coton Clips Astres’ Ambitions as Canon Halts Union’s Progress

This was the major verdict of the 15th day of play in the national Elite One Championship that held last Sunday and Monday, 10th and 11th May 2015, when Coton Sport widen its lead at the top of the table with a 2-1 victory over Astres in Douala and Union’s recent fine form of results dented for the moment by a resurgent Canon of Yaoundé with a 1-3 defeat.

This was Coton Sport’s second win on the road after they won in Yaoundé on day 14 against Apejes of Mfou, while Union’s series of good results stretching from day 12 was brought to an abrupt end by Canon that recorded only its second win of the championship.

Frank Happi. President of Union Sportive of Douala put the blame on his team “We gave the goals to Canon and can only blame ourselves” he said. “We gave them the opportunity for the penalty, the faults were coming from our own defense and not provoked by Canon” he continued making reference to the red card conceded by Union early on in the second half that changed the course of the game.

Nke Deuidonie coach of Canon welcomed the result as a step in the right direction and one that indicates that the players are gradually adopting the system of play introduced.

Still on Sunday, Dragon of Yaounde beat Lion Blesse of Foutouni by 2-0 to climb up to 4th spot on 23 points.

 Yong Sport Academy of Bamenda mean while on Monday, consolidated second spot with a 1-0 victory over Tonnerre Kalara Club in Yaounde. Kongnyuy Jude was on hand after missing the game in Bamenda against Canon on Day 13th to score with a header at the 76th minute through a header after a cross by Thierry Epah from the left flank. The victory propelled the Bamenda outfit to 25 points, 5 behind Coton Sport on top spot, and Kongnyuy Jude to seven goals at the top of the goal scoring chart.

Elsewhere, News Stars of Douala recorded the heaviest win, a 4-0 demolition of struggling Njalla Quan SA of Limbe that drops to the bottom of the log on 10 points. Cosmos of Mbam reignited hopes of revival with a 1-0 win over Apejes of Mfou that has stagnated on 19 point in three playing days, picking only 1 point in their last four days of play. Unisport beat UMS of Loum 2-0, Bamboutos of Mbouda failed to win again for seventh straight game, picking only five points from a possible 21.
