Elecam officials and the administration of the Northwest were briefly held back for a few minutes by a group of people with disability after the official launching of Biometric voters’ card distribution exercise at the Mawa Hotel Mile VI Nkwen on Wednesday May 22, 2013.

The group of four was lead by Ms. Limen Florence, a civil society leader and director of the Community Resource Centre for the Disabled and Disadvantaged.

They arrived the hall which is situated in the 3rd floor of the hotel when they meeting was over and the governor was on his way out. Using unorthodox means like shouting at the top of their voices and standing on the part the governor and other dignitaries were to use to exit the building; they were able to draw the attention of the governor and Elecam officials.

“Elecam should be inclusive and should think about people with disabilities” she told the governor.

“Imagine we had to get some brothers to help us to reach here (the 3rd floor) and this shows that Elecam did not think about us when arranging for this venue” she continued.

The list of their grievances also included lack of access to Elecam offices, to polling station, access to election information and the absent of mobile voting stations to these groups of persons exercise their civic responsibility. They also press for people in disabil

Responding to their demands, Nga Casper regional coordinator of Elecam NW said “at the level of Elecam we try to be as inclusive as possible and that is why statistics puts the Northwest with the highest registered number of people with disability in the country”

“But I must remained you, there is a ministry in charge of Social affairs which is supposed to take care of that, and for our polling stations we try to make them accessible to people with disability as much as possible” he concluded.

“This is the best way we think we can get those considered as the disadvantaged in society have a say in the political process” Mrs. Limen Florence Director of CRCCD said.

“Since most of our members could not go to some of the places that Elecam is carrying out registration for one reason or the other, we decided to bring them here (CRCCD head office) which is accessible and known by all for this important civic exercise” she continued.

Elecam officials expressed satisfaction and called on other groups, “Njangi houses”, churches and organizations to emulate the example of CRCCD.

Registration into the biometric electoral list is due to end on February 28, 2013, unless the head of state extends the registration period.

“This is our own way of drawing the attention of the general public towards the plight of persons with disabilities and other vulnerable conditions…” Madam Limen Florence, coordinator of CRCCD told the over 300 persons that gathered for the event.

“This occasion offers an opportunity for persons with disabilities to feel the warm touched of the public and the public to discover some of the talents that persons with special abilities have” she continued.

She called on all to cultivate the spirit of sharing and to bring up our children to be responsible for one another and be the keeper of each other.

Mr. Limen, the younger brother of the coordinator donated a wheel chair to three year old Donee Fabrice incapacitated from birth.

“Let us learn to share with one another and be each other’s keeper, for no one wrote an invitation to become crippled, and you can leave the house today very able and come back crippled”  said.

Founded in 1999, CRCCD is committed to improving the living condition of the physically disabled and disadvantaged persons by making them self reliant and feel as part of the society. CRCCD carries out capacity building and training, education, sensitization, community mobilization, lobby and advocacy for its members.
