Case Against Bishops Adjourned as Police Escort Christians To Cathedral

The case brought by a consortium of parents against the Bishops and principals of Bamenda Arch Diocese and Kumbo has been adjourned to July 24, 2017 following their first appearance at the Bamenda Court of First Instance Today.

Security was tight in town today with the police and gendarmes deployed at strategic spots in town from the Hospital Roundabout, City Chemist, Veterinary Junction, Finance Junction, Custom Junction, the Governor’s Junction, at the entrance from GRA to the premises of the Bamenda Court of First Instance, to prevent mass rallying of Christians at the court yard.

This still did not deter some Christians of the Catholic and Baptist Church and curious onlookers who defied the ghost town and heavy security to answer present at the court in support of their leaders. In Court was Bishop Bibi Michael, auxiliary Bishop of the Bamenda Arch Diocese.

In a full Court house, the defense council lead by Barrister Sama Francis pray on the court to throw out the case because the plaintiffs are absent without justification and accused them of plagiarism. The council for the plaintiff calls for the case to be adjourned to July 24 despite strong protest for the defense counsel because the lead counsel for the accuser Bar. Achu was sick. The defense also rejected demands from the plaintiff to amend the names on the summons, invoking the caliber of people involved do not need to attend court session. The defense further opined that the court should use its moral judgment to throw out the case against the Bishops because the accusers are violating the law.

More drama unfolded after the trial as the police and gendarmes stationed at strategic junctions insured that they Christians chanting and singing praise songs were forcefully escorted to the Big Mankon Cathedral with the use of intimidating water cannon and police amoured vehicles.

Report from Buea also say a similar trial took place at the Buea Court of First Instance with the Moderator of the PCC and the Bishops of Kumba, Buea and Mamfe accompanied by college of pastors and priest to the court
