Mr Jean-Jacques Kangne Tanouo from Lycée de Zamengoe in Cameroon has triumphed over hundreds of teachers from around the world to achieve the runners up prize in the 2012 ‘Inspirational Teacher’ awards.

The ‘Inspirational Teacher’ awards are part of the ‘School Enterprise Challenge’, a global enterprise competition run by UK based charity Teach a Man to Fish. This competition rewards schools for their sustainability and entrepreneurial skills and attracts hundreds of schools from around the world. Prizes ranging from $1,000 to $5,000 (450 000 to 2.5 million FCFA) to  help them develop their business skills and strengthen the school and the community. The competition is run in two stages, in the first stage schools develop a business plan for a social enterprise and in the second stage they launch the enterprise. Once registered, schools have access to a range of educational materials which help teachers develop a business orientated curriculum.

The ‘Inspirational Teacher’ awards recognise teachers who have made an extra effort to make the School Enterprise Challenge a success in their school and use it to improve the education of their students. Teachers are nominated by fellow teachers, and then a panel at Teach a Man to Fish judge which nomination most deserves the title of ‘Inspirational Teacher of the Year’. There are also prizes up for grabs with $2,000 for the winner and $1,000 for each of the runners up.

Mr Kangne narrowly missed out on the top prize and was awarded the runners up prize. He impressed his fellow teachers with the amount of time and effort he gave to the solar power project run by his School Enterprise Challenge students. He also invested personal money to help buy the first supplies, and donated his tools for the students to use. Mr Kangne has also worked hard to improve the education provided at Lycée de Zamengoe, using the School Enterprise Challenge project as a practical teaching tool.

The 2013 Commonwealth School Enterprise Challenge is now open for registrations. Prizes range from $1,000 for school country winners, to $5,000 for the best schools, with a range of prizes in between. In addition to the schools prizes the best student can win a laptop and the best teacher can win $2,000.
