Breaking-Bamenda Plunged into Panic and Confusion

Many are walking home from the markets and workshops

The City of Bamenda has been plunged into a state of confusion and heightened tension this Friday February  9, 2018 as several residents are scrambling to get home following the deployment of the military into commercial areas of town this morning. Several schools have already shut down for the day while shops and markets are closing down. The major streets are full with people returning home from work, and the streets are slowing running dry of vehicles and bikes. Parents have been fetching their children from school as early as 8:30, barely minutes are dropping them off.

A trader at the Food market told Bamenda Online that security forces came down around the market area ordering them to go back, when they started locking up, many others followed suit and starting rushing back home and spreading the news and causing panic across town. The situation was worsen by an over head military helicopter following very low.

It’s not clear what operation the military supported by the police is carrying out. Yesterday a soldier guarding the Ecobank Commercial Avenue was killed by un- unidentified men. The circumstances leading to his dead are still not clear, but the killing sparked a commotion in town as several city dwellers rushed to reach home before a security lockdown while shop owners from the major streets into the neigbourhoods quickly shut down their shops for the day for fear of the unknown.

The streets are slowing drying up

Some sources are saying it’s a robbery gone wrong while others hold that it was a planned attacked by secessionists. The army has not made any statement and is unwilling to talk about the incident. Some hotel managers have told Bamenda Online that police stormed ther locations to search rooms and identify occupants.

The killing of the security officer came on the same day a bike rider and his passenger were shot early in the morning by the gendarmes on patrol at the Sonac Street for failing to stop when they asked them to stop. Unconfirmed reports reaching us say the passenger shot earlier in the day later died from his gunshot wounds n the hospital
